Who this course is for
Level II is the required starting point for anyone pursuing a Texas non-commissioned security officer registration. It is built for people who are new to the industry and want to enter it the right way — legally, safely, and with a credential the state recognizes.
- New officers who need their Level II certificate to register with the state
- Individuals who have been told to obtain a Texas security credential before starting a role
- Anyone planning to advance to Level III armed training, which requires Level II first
You must be at least 18 years old to register as a non-commissioned security officer in Texas. [verify with DPS/TOPS]
What you’ll learn
Level II covers the foundational knowledge every non-commissioned officer in Texas is expected to know before stepping into a security role. Topics include:
- The role, authority, and legal limits of a non-commissioned (unarmed) security officer
- Texas laws and regulations governing private security under the Texas DPS Private Security Program
- Use-of-force concepts and de-escalation for unarmed officers
- Observation, incident reporting, and proper documentation
- Ethics, professionalism, and public interaction
- Field note-taking and basic report writing
The curriculum follows the Texas DPS Private Security Program’s approved Level II course outline. [verify with DPS/TOPS]
